ABSTRACT

Teilhard de Chardin was a 20th-century Jesuit priest but also a brilliant geologist and paleontologist. He earned scientific and humanitarian honors on the one hand, and aggravated church authorities with his mystical writings, including the inimitable The Divine Milieu (Le Milieu Divin), on the other. His explication of the nature of his work-versus-God quandary carries weight not only because of who he was, but because it is elegant, and the resolution clear and prescriptive.

This brief chapter introduces Pierre Teilhard de Chardin’s specifically religious quandary about work – to whom does he owe allegiance: work in the world, or God?TS : this is the brief chapter summary
