ABSTRACT

According to anti-work, work requires submission of the will and the surrendering of whatever divergent and natural desires a person might hold. What organizations wish to do, and often do successfully, is align employee desires and goals with those of the owners and the larger organization. Hence Willing Slaves of Capital, the title of Frédéric Lordon’s work on this topic.

This chapter provides a look at this always required, and sometimes surprisingly voluntary, submission of the individual’s own desires to those of the employer. The phenomenon of “bosses” and their inevitable use of power is discussed, as is Pierre Bourdieu’s idea that bosses are themselves dominated by the processes of domination. Here too we look at the concept of false consciousness and consider whether such a concept can illuminate the nature of employee submission.

The central anti-work concept of worker submission is critically examined from several angles.TS this is the brief chapter summary
