ABSTRACT

The main idea of this chapter is to bring out the factors of e-participation. A literature review of the e-participation studies is conducted. It describes e-participation and its importance. The concerns related to e-participation, its various mechanisms, and levels of e-participation are discussed. Special attention is given to the United Nations (UN) survey as the UN e-participation scores are used as the data source for the dependent variable in this book. A close-up review of determinants of e-participation, particularly from the cross-national studies is provided. Several gaps in the cross-national studies of e-participation are highlighted. There are hardly any quantitative cross-national studies of e-participation, and the few that have conducted a quantitative analysis have done so with a point in time data. Previous studies have not particularly conducted path analysis and exploration of the mediating effects of technology or institutions on e-participation is scant.
