ABSTRACT

This chapter opens the second part because art historically has functioned as a multifaceted mirror—a reflection of culture and society that has helped people evaluate and understand respective histories. It overviews art’s role in the development of artificial intelligence, to then consider how both are reshaping creativity resulting in the production of unexpected works. Art is discussed as a multifaceted mirror symbiotically linked with technology—their relation can be considered a reflection of culture and society. This chapter contextualizes the art historical periods of modernism, postmodernism, and early stages of digital culture as the foundation for the eventual rise of metacreativity with the implementation of machine learning during the first two decades of the twenty-first century.
