ABSTRACT

The Italian Building contains 28 bedroom ‘studios’, spread over four storeys. In addition, there’s an entire floor assigned to communal activities, with a large living and dining room, a shaded outdoor terrace and a laundry room. Fitness classes, which include yoga, pilates and personal training, take place in a neighbouring building. One of the most distinctive spaces in the building is the communal living room, which is designed to accommodate various different activities, often simultaneously. The room is divided up into clusters, which can be made visually private with the use of white curtain partitions. The bedroom suites come in two layouts; as well as the more typical en-suite rooms, there are also two-level bedrooms where the bed is raised up on a mezzanine above the bathroom. The kitchen units are white, matching the walls, with as much open shelving as possible. This means the only standout elements are the speckled granite work surfaces and the occupant’s own belongings.
