ABSTRACT

Comprising three towers, the Flatmates complex provides accommodation for up to 600 residents. Everyone has access to certain amenities, including a cafe, a lounge bar and a large events hall, but the majority of the living spaces come in the form of apartments that are each shared by six residents. Cutwork developed the interior design concept around the understanding that people need opportunities for both sociability and privacy in their homes. The majority of bedrooms are for singles, although it’s also possible to sign up for a ‘loverz package’ for couples. However, Cutwork is also (through another project) exploring how co-living spaces can be designed for more multigenerational living, finding synergies between people of different age groups. Maeno believes that shared living is very much in its infancy, and that even more design models will emerge as the typology continues to gain pace.
