ABSTRACT

Angel Gardens represents a new generation of apartment buildings that are purpose-built for rent, containing both family-size homes and shared amenity spaces. In the US, where the concept is well established, the model is known colloquially as multifamily, while in the UK peoples call it build-to-rent (BTR). Angel Gardens occupies the site of Shudehill Mill, the UK’s first steam-powered cotton mill, so motifs that celebrate Manchester’s historic textile industry, of the raw materials and the theatre of the production, were used. These work in parallel with the drama of the building itself, one of Manchester’s tallest tower blocks. Service is front and centre of the best BTR propositions, and motivated staff equals satisfied residents who will want to maintain their tenancy; management offices at Angel Gardens have been considered with just the same attention to detail as the private apartments.
