ABSTRACT

Co-working is something peoples have all become familiar with, while co-living is still a fairly radical concept for many. Instead of owning or leasing our own office space, the peoples simply rent a desk in a shared space. In this way, their can combine the freedom of working for ourself with the community spirit offered by a full-time workplace. Luckily for co-working, many operators already knew this. Alongside the larger and most well-known providers, there are also hundreds of small-scale co-working companies, many of which set themselves up with a specific community in mind from the outset and use design as a tool to reinforce this. Building a community around a specific group or demographic doesn’t come without its challenges, as women-focused members’ club The Wing, one of our case studies, discovered to its peril. Set up with the goal of empowering women, The Wing came under fire after failing to navigate issues of gender identity and racial discrimination.
