ABSTRACT

A broadcasting centre from radio’s golden age is the setting for this Los Angeles co-working complex. Among the most surprising spaces in NeueHouse Hollywood is Studio A, the theatre where the pilot for I Love Lucy was filmed. This is still a place for performance and cinema (it is occasionally rented out by production studios), but it also takes on a more domestic character, with the introduction of globe chandeliers, shaggy rugs and removable furniture. Throughout the building, materials create a sense of quality. Board-formed concrete walls and exposed pipework might have felt overly industrial, but they are softened by touches of white marble, warm oak, polished steel and Moroccan textiles. Colour is applied sparingly, but there are flashes of deep red and burnt orange. It is not an interior designed to shout; rather it offers a level of sophistication that respects its old Hollywood roots.
