ABSTRACT

The Wing was established to help women thrive in business. The Wing has many obstacles to overcome in order to rebuild its reputation, but it still stands as a model for how workplaces can cultivate new forms of community. Underlying the stylistic elements are practical solutions that make The Wing’s spaces functional as well as Instagram-pretty. Before designing SoHo, Chiara de Rege spent days at the Flatiron location observing how facilities were occupied. She noticed that laptops were typically used everywhere, in the lounge and cafe areas as well as desk spaces, so adjustments were made to the proportions of built-in seats and surfaces at SoHo to make them comfortable enough for a full day of work. While the inaugural site in Flatiron served as a testbed for the concept, both design aesthetic and programme were defined with the launch of the second New York space, in SoHo.
