ABSTRACT

Garden House offers a form of co-living that feels familiar, but is quietly radical. Through a series of considered interventions, this simple terraced house in west London allows two to four people to comfortably live and work together. On the surface it is just like any shared house, containing a mix of private rooms and communal spaces. Garden House contains multifunctional living spaces, so that activities like eating, working and socialising can coexist. The solution proposed by Garden House is to make living spaces more ambiguous, facilitating different patterns of use. In Garden House, custom furniture helps to facilitate the same kinds of informal interactions. The only thing missing from Garden House, according to its architects, is a public element. High Street House is a new project that explores the same ideas as Garden House, but on a larger scale.
