ABSTRACT

Basecamp chose Studio Aisslinger to design the interiors of all its properties after seeing the studio’s design for the 25hours Hotel in Berlin, where the industrial materials and street art create a relaxed and informal aesthetic. Although Basecamp has a mix of both purpose-built and renovated properties, the interiors tend to have a converted-warehouse feel. The communal areas are organised based on how noisy they are likely to be, with loud spaces at one end and quieter spaces at the other. This creates some unusual relationships; for instance, the laundry room and the gym sit alongside the lounge areas. Studio Aisslinger employed tactics to make spaces feel cosy, even when they are large and open. There are small enclosures – a house-shaped seating booth and a hut made from corrugated Perspex – where groups of students can find the privacy.
