ABSTRACT

The chapter builds on the contents of Chapter 11 to describe the ways adults can scaffold the leading activity of infants and toddlers to provide the most beneficial conditions for the emergence of developmental accomplishments of these stages. With rapid developmental changes taking place during infancy and toddlerhood, the chapter is divided into two sections to identify the kinds of scaffolding specific to babies aged 0–6 and 6–12 months, as well as for toddlers aged 12–24 and 24–36 months. The final section of the chapter focuses on older toddlers and explains how supporting the beginnings of self-regulation and pretend play at this age lays the foundation for the appearance of the leading activity of the next stage—make-believe play.
