ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 argues that, rather than focusing primarily on policies and procedures, a systemic approach is essential to prevent clergy abuse. Fundamental changes to the language and theology of the church are critical. A move away from clericalism; increased representation of women in leadership and decision-making; open, honest, and non-judgemental discussion about sexuality; and more respectful and inclusive gender and relationship models are needed if the church is truly committed to ending abuse within its walls.
