ABSTRACT

Some aspects of Shakespeare in Germany show Shakespeare moving outwards and across cultures in time and space. German Shakespeare is a case study. I removed the subtitle of the chapter – “The Poet as the Philosopher of the Human” – to keep the titles of the chapter short. German Shakespeare is a philosophical Shakespeare, once of the concerns of the two volumes of this study. Although I wrote decades ago on the importance of Germany in understanding Shakespeare and others have for about 250 years, I include this chapter as a way of decentring Shakespeare as being the preserve of England, Britain or the English-speaking world.
