ABSTRACT

Midlife often coincides with increased conservatism and unwillingness to take on risk. Healthcare in the UK is provided by the government and funded by taxpayers. Not so in the United States. ‘Without a doubt, architects in the United States are faced with one significant and limiting midlife pressure: health insurance being tied to employment,’ says Donna Sink. Mid-career workers have many outside factors weighing in on their careers. Head of technology at Ayre Chamberlain Gaunt Allister Lewis feels that anything is possible, no matter the age of the individual; what is important is an interest in the subject at hand. Diane Reicher Jacobs finds it harder to take time for exploration, as she feels the pressure to produce, take care of others or cross things off her list more. Misunderstandings over expectations and priorities rear their ugly heads a lot, and the outcome is often a damaged relationship.
