ABSTRACT

Memorialization is a multifaceted process that inevitably involves multiple questions, perceptions, and audiences invested in the outcome. The goal of this chapter is to provide conceptual frameworks, and thus insights, that are helpful in both working through the memorialization process and in designing research projects to investigate the topic. The chapter explains where memorialization fits within the crisis management cycle; shares useful conceptual frameworks for those who are interested in memorialization, whether the study of it (by academic audience), the act of it (by campus practitioners), or the general understanding of it (by broad audiences with interest in this topic); and discusses the implications of emotional and intellectual engagement with memorial spaces and audiences.
