ABSTRACT
Among the many questions that swirl around conversations about memorialization are those that consider location and design. Where to site a memorial, what scale it should be, and how its design will mesh with the existing campus aesthetic are questions that all impinge on a campus resource that is always in high demand—space. This chapter contains detailed examples of memorials on four campuses—Marshall University, University of Cincinnati, Oklahoma State University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology—that present the different processes undertaken to site memorials and consider the impact to the physical and socially constructed campus environments. Each of these examples highlights that, while tending to the spatial realities of the campus, memorial location and design should be done in a way that is meaningful to the community and the moment.
