ABSTRACT

Recognizing that it is fiendishly difficult to transplant success from one context to another, this chapter explores how we can best turn evidence into action. We start with a review of six layers of implementation complexity that all education improvement initiatives must confront when turning intentions into action that generate impact. We then survey 11 different methodologies for the design, implementation, evaluation, and scaling of education improvement activities – including deliverology, Logical Framework Approach, and problem-driven iterative adaptation. Although there are major differences between these approaches, we identify 23 relatively common processes/actions across these methodologies – which we build out into an education-specific implementation called Leaning to GOLD, in Chapter 11.
