ABSTRACT

Knowledge and the use of different video game genres can help play therapists connect with their clients and highlight the therapeutic properties of game play. Genres give play therapists a place to start, or from which to continue, the journey of finding therapeutic value within the use of digital play therapy (DPT). The genres of video games are fluid, and many overlap one another. One game in a certain genre may not bring the same therapeutic value as another in its same area, and it will be different with different clients. Within this chapter, many different genres in which a video game can fall and how they can help in the therapeutic process will be discussed.
