ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief look at the macroeconomic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Germany. The United Kingdom has a much smaller population than the United States but had fewer cases per million population. However, the United Kingdom had far more deaths per case compared to the United States. The death rate in Japan was 1.45 percent per case. In summary, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany were all hit pretty hard by the pandemic, with cases per million population especially high in the United States and the death rate per case greatest in the United Kingdom. In contrast to the United States, the other three nations did not experience large increases in the unemployment rate.
