ABSTRACT

Using the refined findings of individual case themes and Meta-themes in addition to the cross-case Meta-themes identified in previous chapters, the final chapter of this book proposes a new framework for the design of prisons focused on people’s health and well-being. The chapter is divided into three main sections. The first section assembles the new framework, which consists of six interrelated dimensions: DESIGN PRIORITIES, DESIGN PRINCIPLES, FINANCIAL OPTIMISATION, DECISION-MAKING, OPERATIONAL TRANSPARENCY, and EDUCATION, offering an individual an explanation of their interactions. The author acknowledges that the implementation of this framework, however, requires considering the existence of many inconsistencies in each prison model about what prison services say, what decisions they make, and what actions they take. Therefore, the second section assesses the proposed framework through the lens of Nils Brunsson’s decision theory of organised hypocrisy, identifying a set of recommendations that are presented in the last section of the chapter.
