ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the main findings of the qualitative content analysis of mainstream media coverage of the protests in Beverwaard. First, it shows how dominant media stories largely excluded the perspectives of anti-asylum seekers' centre protesters and focused on the violent and negative aspects of the protests at the cost of their concerns. Second, this chapter illustrates protesters faced an objectively limited discursive opportunity structure, as they were visible in the media but generally had low legitimacy and resonance. Overall, this chapter contrasts the ‘perceived’ discursive opportunities of protesters derived from the interview data, with the objective discursive opportunities present in the media content.
