ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the elusive dynamic between individual and institution. Conversely, the editor is obliged sometimes to play the opposing role of naysayer, arguing that a new moment the director has fallen in love with no longer plays in the context of the film at large. Basically, the editor is proxy for the audience, and must stay the course, all the way through the last 0.2 miles of the 26.2-mile marathon. The massive amount of editorial media, coming in from and going out to different departments, forms an import-export enterprise complete with manifests and customs checks on “shipments.” The complex logistics of operating this hectic port fall to a supporting staff of assistant editors. The editor's role as timekeeper also takes on a new focus. In animation, every frame of animation is so costly that if the running time grows an extra couple of minutes from the previous screening, there are serious budget implications.
