      ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the enforcement mechanisms in Zimbabwe, which seek to enhance the effectiveness of boards of public entities and promote corporate governance. It compares corporate governance compliance enforcement mechanisms of Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Australia. Zimbabwe has a judicial system that plays a crucial role in the enforcement of the specific measures. The challenge remains to ascertain how effective enforcement mechanisms have been in promoting good corporate governance and enhancing the effectiveness of public entities' boards so that entities function to promote economic and social development rather than being a drain on the focus. Australia's regulatory system relies on a public enforcement model under which the Australian securities and investments commission operates as the enforcement mechanism for breach of directors' duties under the Australian civil penalty regime. Australia has been more assertive than Zimbabwe in so far as the implementation and enforcement of corporate governance standards is concerned.
