ABSTRACT

Prior to the years in which Jean-Jacques Rousseau devoted himself to his major writings and what proved to be his masterpieces, there was a period during which his attention turned again to music. During this time he wrote his opera The Village Magician which was performed before Louis XV, as has already been told. At this time his mind was very much occupied with music and this led to his writing in the form of a letter a booklet On French Music, in which he expressed his views on some of the shortcomings of contemporary compositions -and roused anger and fierce opposition.
