ABSTRACT

This chapter looks into Ye’s revival in Later Zhao and the layout of the city. Later Zhao’s Shi Le reconstructed the Ye city and it became the capital again. By incorporating celestial phenomena, yin-yang balance, four seasons, and five elements into the layout planning, the city took a neater look, with its south–north central axis spanning the Big Dipper, Tower Equaling the Big Dipper, Hall of Supreme Militancy, and Zhongyang Gate due south. The gates lying clockwise from Jianchun Gate in the east were Guangyang Gate, Zhongyang Gate, Fengyang Gate, Jinming Gate, Jiu Gate, and Guangde Gate. In the minds of Chinese, the star, tower, hall, and gates form an imaginary cosmos.
