ABSTRACT

Doctor-patient connection is initially largely determined by key visual data derived from our appearance to the other. The doctor’s white coat, the patient gown vs. patient clothing, and body language including facial expression are important in creating first impressions. Considering our appearance and how we are being perceived as well as how we are perceiving others in the early moments of an encounter is instructive and useful. Eye contact is a crucial component of body language and connecting with others, and eye contact is easily achieved with simple awareness. Healthcare interactions can be optimized by regular attention to the visual data used in visual processing.
