ABSTRACT

We often focus on auditory data in healthcare interactions. We think about what is said, what questions to ask, what answers were given or remain unknown. In thinking about auditory data, it is important for the doctor to break down medical terminology into words that can be understood by the patient. On the patient side, it is necessary to ask for clarification. Both the doctor and patient need to be careful to not overestimate understanding, and both sides benefit from increased awareness of auditory information transmitted through the words spoken as well as verbal tone and silence. Awareness of auditory data can optimize doctor-patient connection in healthcare interactions.
