ABSTRACT

It is essential that we work on basic fact fluency with students in small guided math groups. We have to take them through the cycle of concrete, pictorial and abstract activities. We need to make sure that students understand, can explain and appropriately use the various strategies. It is essential that we pull groups and work with students in their zone of proximal development. We then follow this work up with workstations and homework that correlates with the concepts they are working on. Fluency is a continuum and all the students are working toward the grade level fluency, but they are not all starting at the same point at the same time.
