ABSTRACT
It is important to work with students in small guided math groups focusing on word problems. Students are usually at different levels when learning word problems. They are scaffolded into a hierarchy that goes from easy to challenging. The small group discussion should reference the whole group problem solving work. The focus should be on getting students to think about the context and the numbers, to reason about the problem and use visual representations and tools to unpack it.
