ABSTRACT

Counting and cardinality is such an important aspect of kindergarten. Many of these concepts lay the foundation for the rest of the work that students will do throughout their schooling. We know that counting is essential. We understand that subitizing is a bedrock of arithmetic. We know that allowing students to compose and decompose numbers throughout the year builds flexibility. We want students to be able to compare numbers and have the language to talk about what they are doing. Throughout the year, students should be encouraged to work on the language and work with tools to build a strong sense of number.
