ABSTRACT
In his novel, The Grapes of Wrath (1939), John Steinbeck describes environmental degradation in language of biblical sin and curse, of exodus and the attempt to return to a lost Eden. Like a wrathful prophet of doom, Steinbeck spells out the charge against America, land of plenty, for maltreating the poor.
