ABSTRACT

Many interviewees found help and support from four different African American institutions for dealing with death. Many spoke of the help and support they received from an African American church congregation and an African American clergy person. Some interviewees found comfort and guidance in African American gospel music, spirituals, and sacred music. Some talked about a funeral directed by an African American funeral director and valued the knowledge and sensitivity that that funeral director and the funeral director’s staff had in working with African Americans. Some people talked about their loved one being buried in an African American cemetery and found comfort in that.
