ABSTRACT

In the opening chapter, the nature of theory is introduced. The notion of theory as a decision tool is discussed, where theory is seen to inform key stage. The debate around the primacy of social structure and individual agency is discussed, where the reader is invited to consider both theory that addresses social structure and individual agency. Next, how research philosophies help shape and define theory is discussed. Upon reading this chapter, the critical role of theory in behavioural research will be clear.
