ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with the power of motivation to drive behaviour. Theories that detail the process of motivation and those that seek to explain the emotions and cognitions that sit behind motivation are considered. Theories that are informed by the humanistic school of thought are discussed, including Maslow and Alderfer’s hierarchy of needs and Herzberg’s two-factor theory. Next, self and collective efficacy, along with expectancy theories and the theory of planned behaviour are reviewed, before finally looking at the role of cognitive dissonance as a motivational force. Throughout, practical examples of putting motivational theory into action are presented. Upon reading this chapter, it will be clear how motivational forces drive behaviour.
