ABSTRACT

The Ministry of Housing, Lands and the Environment is the governmental agency chiefly responsible for human settlements planning and management in Mauritius. It is divided into three main units: the Survey Division, the Planning Division and the Administration and Finance Division. The Ministry of Housing, Lands and the Environment is at a point where an increasing number of organizations all over the world now find themselves. The Ministry’s archives are complemented by those kept by the Office of the Registrar-General, who is responsible for registering all deeds and leases in Mauritius, including those pertaining to Crown Land. There are at least three important reasons for proceeding as quickly as possible with computerization of the Ministry’s records of Crown Land. These are as follows: security, analysis and checking, and administration. With its Crown Lands and Leases database system, the Ministry has the opportunity to make an immediate and worthwhile beginning to computerization.
