ABSTRACT

The Turkish Ministry of Public Works and Settlement was formed in 1983 by merger of the Ministry of Public Works and the Ministry of Reconstruction and Resettlement. A Data Processing Department and a Computer Centre were set up in 1985 as a Department within the General Directorate of Technical Research and Implementation. At the end of 1985, the Department also took delivery of a Data General MV-4000 Eclipse minicomputer. In terms of applications, the Department’s first priority has been database management. The Department is also contemplating computer applications for land management, urban research, simulation models and engineering analysis. The Data Processing Department could face an explosive growth in demand for computer services in the next few years. The key for the Data Processing Department establishing an effective kind of co-ordination over the process of computerization in the Ministry is development of a strategy that is “pro-active”, not just “re-active”.
