ABSTRACT

From the foregoing cases, it must be clear that microcomputers have many and varied uses in relation to the management of human settlements. In fact, the key feature of the microcomputer “revolution” may turn out to be not so much its technological as its social achievements. Naturally, there are major roads linking large centres of population and a patchwork of minor roads connecting towns, villages and even private houses. For the management of human settlements, microcomputers offer at least five important advantages when it comes to data-processing. Microcomputers represent a revolution in information processing, not because of their technology. Microcomputers offer developing countries an unprecedented opportunity to capitalize on their often impressive investments in public education. Perhaps microcomputers offer one of those chances that seem all too elusive these days — a chance for developing countries to gain a little ground on the industrial countries, instead of falling further behind.
