ABSTRACT

The Department of Public Works in the Directorate of Urban and Regional Planning of the Directorate-General of Human Settlements is setting up a computerized information system on human settlements as part of a United Nations-assisted project to design a National Urban Development Strategy (NUDS). In March 1984, UNCHS sent a Mission to Jakarta to assess the contribution of United Nations assistance to human settlements planning and management in Indonesia. The Watts report concluded that, while remarkable progress had been made in upgrading basic urban services in Indonesia over the past IS years, it was doubtful how much of this could actually be attributed to good planning. The NUDS project is an ambitious attempt to coordinate the planning of human settlements across sectoral/departmental boundaries and to integrate that with broad national objectives. The information system was regarded more as a by-product than a component of the NUDS project.
