ABSTRACT

The table which follows sets out merely the record of those tests which proved to be significantly in favour of either type of school; those which tended to be significant; and those which showed no significant difference. Where no test was given the record is left blank. The fluctuation in the number of schools tested at the Infant School stage was caused by the interruption created by the outbreak of war. Until then I was testing six pairs of schools in a pilot study, but when procedure was finally determined I was anxious to see whether results seemed likely to be forthcoming, so if there were two or three of the schools which were not needed for further pilot work I gave the tests in these schools to groups of children selected and paired as they would be in the final study. There seems therefore no reason why these results should not be included and they compensate to some degree for the fact that owing to changes of teachers I lost two pairs of schools which were intended to be in the final study.
