ABSTRACT

The new type of international governance requires leaders to have new missions, abilities, and ideas. As China is gradually developing into a global power, the anxiety and expectations of the international society toward China’s emergence have increased. Whether China can become a responsible leading power not only relates to the future rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, but also to being continuously focused on by established powers as well as a vast number of developing countries. Since the 18th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party in 2012, China’s President Xi Jinping has put forward a series of essential discourses for a new type of international relations. This chapter introduces the change in China’s understanding of internationalism and suggests that China should provide new public goods in line with the spirit of the new internationalism in order to enhance its participation in global governance.
