ABSTRACT

The new type of international governance fundamentally requires leading powers to deal with globalization issues with new concepts, properly combining domestic interests with the interests of international society. As an emerging country with a rich cultural heritage, China is expected by the international society to carry out its responsibilities in the establishment of the global cultural community, as well as in cultural governance. This chapter argues that in respect of national interests and international prosperity, China has to face the urgent issue of its cultural modernization, giving priorities to cultural problems both in its domestic institutional modernization, as well as its practices in global governance. Through better coordination between its responsibilities in global cultural management and national interest, it may find a new way to clear the misunderstandings of the international society on China’s development.
