ABSTRACT

A single agreed-upon definition for engagement does not yet exist, although researchers have converged on at least two. This chapter includes a comprehensive review of how engagement has been defined thus far, what research evidence supports those definitions, and an overarching definition that offers a unifying conceptualization of engagement. I also include a comparison across definitions - how are they similar to and/or different from one another - and point out remaining gaps in the current conceptualizations of engagement.
