ABSTRACT

In the early 1950s, theatrical policies focused performing market and tolerated the works of different styles and categories. Based on the theatrical policy “walking on two legs,” the cultural department in different places should give adequate consideration to the values of modern drama and traditional drama, allow the flexibility for both so that the executors of the policy might interpret it in different ways. In “the Forum on Theatrical Presentation of Modern Life” held in 1958, Liu Zhiming made a clear-cut explanation of “walking on two legs” policy. The theatrical policy quietly regressed under the slogan “taking the modern drama as the key link.” Of course, the playwrights of modern drama were more favored and supported by the government. During the years of “the Great Leap Forward Movement,” a theatrical leap forward nurtured not only tremendous scripts, but also a number of new theatrical genres.
