ABSTRACT

From the 1950s to 1960s, having exercised a series of theatrical policies which helped the government to control theatrical circles, the government frequently put forth the repertoire guides, making the repertoire directly affect the theatrical development. The notice of the Culture Ministry on excavating traditional drama, called "rescuing excavation and collection of traditional drama scripts", iterated, Some scripts are still kept in the mind of the senior dramatists. In addition, the transformation of ownership degraded their status as they were taken as the obstacle to theatrical development. The speeches delivered by Premier Chou En-lai and Marshal Chen Yi at Guangzhou Conference greatly aroused the confidence of the attendants to promote theatrical development. By virtue of engaging the famous and senior dramatists to demonstrate their performing technique and skills, the government laid stress on the significance of inheriting traditional drama in an attempt to highlight the value of its classical scripts.
