ABSTRACT

Psychedelic medicine is an emerging option for mental health treatment, especially for PTSD, depression, and addictions. Psychoactive plants and their derivatives may be either used or abused by people with PTSD. Understanding the use and abuse of specific plants and chemical substances provide an opportunity to explore treatment options with clients. Psychedelic, entheogen, and hallucinogens are standard terms of reference for these plant medicines. There is renewed interest in the role of psychoactive plants like cannabis and kava. Psychedelic medicine includes the use of peyote for addictions and PTSD, ibogaine for opiate addiction, MDMA and ayahuasca for PTSD, and ketamine for depression and pain.
