ABSTRACT

Our preferred collaborative method for creating new knowledge is based on the Collaborative Helping Map. We ask, “What might your future be, if you were to decide?”, “What gets in the way of this happening?”, and “What will support you to go in that direction?”. This chapter describes step by step how we apply the helping map on the paper chart, what questions to ask and how to place the different answers about problems, supports, visions, dreams, and values. One story illustrates in detail how the collaborative principle is used at the start of a family therapy course and supports the creation of the treatment plan. A therapeutic letter based on the helping map is included, and the chapter concludes with a description of this family's first taking stock session, where the helping map is the therapist's guiding light for the conversation.
