ABSTRACT

Enhanced cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT-E) addresses the features of eating disorders (e.g., being underweight and undereating, negative body image, events, and moods influencing eating) with specific strategies and procedures, which are discussed with the patient in the session. Parental involvement in supporting their child to apply CBT-E procedures will vary from case to case. However, the general strategy is first to discuss the specific strategies with the young patient and then the pros and cons of involving the parents to help them to implement them. If the patient agrees, the parents are invited to a joint patient and parent session to discuss the type of help required. This chapter describes the main procedures of the focused form of CBT-E and the ways parents can support the young person to implement them, if indicated.
