ABSTRACT

This Chapter three offers a brief description of each the three types of collaborative governance processes. Though there are many ways to consider the types of collaborative governance processes, this book looks to the kind of work the collaborative governance group is undertaking to discern the type. Considered through that lens, there are two major types of collaborative governance processes: agreement-seeking, in which the participants are endeavoring to arrive at a shared decision; and collective action, in which the participants are endeavoring to achieve a shared goal by aggregating their resources. This book also includes a third type, referred to as collaborative systems. Collaborative systems can involve agreement-seeking, collective action, or both, but this chapter treats those processes separately because they are longer-term, less project-driven, and typically require a more formal governance structure.
